Kegans magneasium lab

Kegan 1-13-12

Magnesium lab

Safety concerns are:
1. Were goggles
2. Be care ful when lighting the magnesium
3. Have a friend help direct your hand holding the magnesium to the crucible (you dont wanna go blind so be shure to get help)
4. Make shure that your flame from the bunsen burner is nit above the crucible or it will either crackor shatter.

Materials:
Crucible
Batteries
Tongs
Stand for crucible
Crucible lid
Magnesium
Masser( electric)

Bunsen burner
Striker for lighting the bunsen burner

Procedure:
First mass the crucible
Then mas the crucible with the magneasium
Next burn the magneasium and mass afterwards
Then do the same thing with lid on
Then test conductivity of the magnesium with the two batteries

What happened/ findings:
Normal crucible weight is 20.8 grams
Magnesium weight is 0.6 grams
Crucible with magnesium is 21.84 grams
After magnesium is burnt in the crucible it. Is massed at 21.89 grams

2.Exothermic energy was released. You can conclude that it lets energy out.
3.The magnesium reacted to the oxygen more than the nitrogen.
4.mgO/magnesium oxide
mg3N2/ magneasium nitrate
5.oxygen
6.the magneasium was conductive and it dose prove that the compound is ionic
7.massed it wrong or electric masser made an error

1. Sometimes found in vitamins
