Brooke Maroon's Magnesium Lab 1.18.12

SAFETY:
* no baggy clothing/open toed shoes/long hair pulled back
* wear safety glasses
*do not look at the burning magnesium once it ignites, becuase it emits a bright UV light

MATERIALS:
-crucible
-bunsen burner
-tongs
-matches/striker/lighter
-magnesium wiring
-triangle holder

PROCEDURE:
1.) Measure two 2" strips of magnesium and twist them together
2.) Get you bunsen burner lit, with a good flame with the triangle blue
3.) Set your crucible in the triangle holder on top of the burner
4.) Let the magnesium heat for two minutes.
5.) If nothing happens after two minutes, you may take the magnesium out with tongs and put it directly into the flame,do not look at the flame when it lights & turns white. It can burn your eyes because of how bright it is.

Brooke, Jordan & I accidently dropped the first crucible & it broke because we were holding it wrong with the tongs. The second time we did it, nothing happened. We could not get it to light. The third and final time we did it, we did it correct. It lit very fast. I was looking at the bright light for a little while because I forgot that it could burn my eyes but I immediately looked away when I remembered.

RESULTS:
Mass of EMPTY crucible: .8485
With Magnesium .0040
Mass after on fire: 0.8515
