Chemisrty In a Bag - Chem lab

Materials needed: safety goggles, baggies, a pipet, two separate spoons, one for calcium chloride, one for sodium bicarbonate, water, phenol red.

Steps: First you get a baggie and decide what items you want to experiment with. Then when you decide what liquid and what powder you want to use, you take the powder of your choice and put it in one corner of the baggie. Then take either the water or the phenol red and put it in the other side of the baggie. Then start shaking it all together till they start mixing and you start seeing things happen. Then when you think the reaction is done open the baggie and waft it. Also note, if it is hot or cold. Or even if the bag expanded or stayed its original size. Just keep doing this, but each time use different mixtures and then you will find out what makes it hot what makes it cold and what makes the bag expanded. Then when you think you know what does what, you are done. Make sure you clean up good.

Observations: Purpleish color, a pinkish color, yellow or orange color, hot, cold, big, small, smells like peroxide, filled with gas.

Other things you may need to know: Phenol red stains clothes and the calcium chloride may irritate your skin. Also, when experimenting be careful because the bag may pop.

QUESTIONS:

1. I think the Calcium Chloride made the temperature change in the overall reaction.

2. Phenol Red and Calcium Chloride produced heat.

3. The overall color that i saw was orange. The Phenol Red and Calcium Chloride caused this.

4. No, because the water and Sodium Bicarbonate caused the gas, and it had no temp.

5. All of the mixtures were tested.

6. The testing of the change of temperature, color, feeling, smell make a new chemical substance.

7. Just combine Calcium Chloride and Water, and see what happens after.

8. Yes, the changes are caused by the general temperature and the breaking and forming of chemical bonds that result in the creation of other chemicals.
